Outline of the 10 PMC Training Modules
 
Module 1a: Introduction to Management Consultancy
This module enables the participant to
  1. Explain in public what a management consultant is and does.
  2. Learn and share new consulting frameworks, tools and techniques.
  3. Learn and share engagement management tips and pitfalls.
  4. Learn and share from the experience of other participants.
  5. Establish ties with other management consultants.
  6. Create or review a Value Proposition for one's management consulting practice.
Module 1b: Ethics and the Law (compulsory)
This module enables the participant to:
  1. Understand the difference between ethics and the law.
  2. Explain to another person why management consultants need to observe a code of professional conduct.
  3. Remember key articles in the PMC Code of Professional Conduct.
  4. Learn how to judge sample cases of ethical conduct and misconduct.
Module 2: Project Management
This module enables the participant to
  1. Discuss behaviours of a successful consultancy project manager.
  2. Discuss supportive actions of top-level management that are critical to the success of the project.
  3. Discuss specific things that a consultant project manager needs to be or do on the project.
  4. Identify phases or components of a management consultancy project.
  5. Prepare a simple Gantt Chart.
  6. Identify and describe challenges that a consultant faces in managing a project and action plans that can be taken to handle the challenges.
  7. Describe pitfalls in consulting that should be avoided.
Module 3: Proposal Writing and Project Scoping
This module enables the participant to
  1. Know the type of information to get from the prospective client through preliminary research before writing the proposal.
  2. Learn which aspects to pay attention to in writing a proposal.
  3. Write a proposal, using a standard checklist of information.
  4. Know the tips and pitfalls in writing proposals.
Module 4: Data Gathering and Collation
This module enables the participant to
  1. Learn a systematic way of gathering and collating data for management consulting engagements.
  2. Learn how to apply specific tips and techniques in data-gathering through role-playing, exercises and case analysis.
  3. Learn how to use critical thinking to differentiate logical from non-logical statements and therefore arrive at sound conclusions.
Module 5: Analysis and Recommendations
This module enables the participant to
  1. Know the basic principles and techniques in analysing problems and designing solutions as recommendations.
  2. Learn a new and proven way for arriving at complex decisions.
  3. Be able to apply basic creative thinking tools and techniques that can result in unique differentiating solutions.
  4. Be exposed to software that they can use to facilitate analysis and recommendations for their clients.
Module 6: Report Writing
This module enables the participant to
  1. Learn when progress and final reports should be submitted.
  2. Practice preparing a final report using a suggested sequence and format.
  3. Become more aware of the tips and pitfalls in writing reports.
Module 7: Project Implementation and Completion
This module enables the participant to
  1. Discuss situations where the consultant need not be involved with the implementation of the recommendations.
  2. Describe specific things that the consultant and client can plan for “Implementation Day”.
  3. Explain why culture is the greatest hurdle to implementation and not technology.
  4. Identify major reasons why some recommendations fail to be implemented.
  5. Explain key techniques that will aid implementation.
  6. Describe tactical guidelines that will aid implementation.
  7. List key considerations at completion of project.
Module 8: Client Consultant Relationship
This module enables the participant to
  1. Describe the types of clients to expect.
  2. Identify phases of building a client-consultant relationship.
  3. List critical skills in relationship management with the client.
  4. Explain the purpose of the review meeting and the agenda and know how to conduct one.
  5. Discuss tips for preparing an effective review meeting.
  6. Discuss key points on how to improve the relationship with the client continuously.
Module 9: Application for Government Incentives (compulsory)
This module enables the participant to
  1. Gain a better understanding of government incentives so as to advise clients on the most optimal ways to tap on the incentives for maximum impact to the consultancy project.
  2. Ensure a smooth and efficient incentive application process for the client.
