FAQs for Consultant

  1. What are the benefits of becoming a PMC?
PMC certification offers a number of benefits for your career and business.

    Recognising your professional standing
Certification shows clients that you not only have the experience and competencies needed to do a good job, but also that you take a professional approach to your work.  The certification is also recognised by government agencies which provide funding for management projects.

    Earning a professional title
You will have the privilege of using the professional designation of PMC after your name. You can also use the PMC designation and logo in your personal marketing collaterals. Leveraging on Singapore’s strong branding, the PMC designation will also be an asset when you vie for overseas, especially regional, consultancy projects.

    Presenting you to potential clients
Your certification will be giving greater profile through promotion of the PMC Scheme in website and newsletters and at seminars and conferences, especially those involving SMEs and other potential clients of management consultants.  In addition, your PMC status and your specialisation will be listed on the PMC website. Companies that approach government agencies for recommendation of management consultants will be referred to this list of PMCs.

Demonstrating your commitment to the profession through continual learning
Your skills and knowledge will continue to grow and develop through the PMC Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Programme. This enhances your career and allows you to stay relevant in the rapidly changing global business environment.

    Enjoying other privileges as PMC
As a PMC, you will get to enjoy other benefits:
    - Invitations to attend courses, seminars and conferences organised by the PMC Certification Board and its partners for free or at discounted rate
    - Opportunities to network, learn, share best practices, and meet other PMC consultants
    - Latest updates on management consulting development
    - Potential job leads and referrals

  2. The certification scheme is for management consultants. How do you define a “management consultant”?
As a working definition, a management consultant is a person who provides a professional service to organisations to achieve their organisational goals by (a) identifying and analysing problems; and (b) proposing and assisting in implementing solutions to management issues (e.g. relating to strategic planning, organisational development, business development, HR systems, quality management, business processes)

  3. I am a consultant in <my specialisation> (E.g. ISO, Branding, IT). Must I be certified?
The PMC is an industry-led, voluntary certification scheme. Management consultants do not need to be PMC certified to practice their profession. Instead government agencies consider PMC scheme as a mechanism to ensure that consultants tapping on government funding are qualified and credible. For example, SPRING now requires that consultants under the Business Excellence and SMART programme be PMC certified. This would likely be expanded to other programmes and incentives under SPRING and other government agencies as they reviewed to consider making PMC a requirement to tap on government funding scheme. Other national agencies and bodies are also using the PMC certification as a requirement or reference standard for their own scheme. For example, PMC consultant can apply to be on the CaseTrust panel of consultancy firms with exemption from submission of 1-3 completed CaseTrust related projects.

You should consider certification if you wish to be recognised as a qualified and credible consultant. With certification, you can tell potential clients that you are bound to a Code of Professional Conduct which ensures the ethical conduct of the consultant. There are also other benefits of PMC certification such as listing on the PMC website which is very well-visited, as well as potential job referrals from the PMC Secretariat (see FAQ 1).
